Taking its title from a nonsensical palindrome, UFOTOFU functions as an anomalous linguistic model, whose fluid framework is mirrored in the exhibition’s approach to form and material. Drawing from both personal experience and extensive research, artist Alexandra Metcalf constructs material worlds where time collapses and forgotten histories resurface.
Born in London in 1992 and based in Berlin, Metcalf views her materials and subject matter as holding latent energies which she harnesses to transform spaces into scenes of pathology, performance, and satire, creating a distinctive theatrical experience that unfolds like a narrative.
What UFOTOFU ultimately reveals is the institutional compulsion to frame women’s capacities as anomalies: spectacled, pathologized, contained. By mimicking the languages of the institutions and traditional power structures, the exhibition shows them as systems of endless return: palindromic, reversible, comic in their persistence. UFOTOFU is therefore an archive, parody, séance, and farce in equal measure. It situates the space as theatre, where knowledge is performed, dismantled, and staged again.
Alongside UFOTOFU is The Syzygy. A sardonic "philosophy of science" invented by the French writer Alfred Jarry, Syzygy is a chance alignment with purpose, a pun.

Alexandra Metcalf graduated from the Chelsea College of Art and Design, London and Rhode Island School of Design, Providence. Her work has recently been exhibited at No. 9 Cork Street, London; FRAC Corsica, Corte; Forde, Geneva; Kunsthalle Zürich; Champ Lacombe, Biarritz; 15 Orient Gallery, New York; and Ginny on Frederick, London. Metcalf’s work is held in The Museum of Modern Art Library Collection, New York; The Perry and Marty Granoff Center for the Creative Arts, Brown University, Providence; and The Perimeter, London.

Empruntant son titre à un palindrome absurde, UFOTOFU fonctionne comme un modèle linguistique anormal, dont la structure fluide se reflète dans l’approche de l’exposition vis-à-vis de la forme et de la matière. S’appuyant à la fois sur son expérience personnelle et sur des recherches approfondies, l’artiste Alexandra Metcalf construit des univers matériels où le temps s’effondre et où des histoires oubliées refont surface.
Née à Londres en 1992 et basée à Berlin, Metcalf considère ses matériaux et ses sujets comme porteurs d’énergies latentes qu’elle mobilise pour transformer les espaces en scènes de pathologie, de performance et de satire, créant une expérience théâtrale singulière qui se déploie comme un récit.
Ce que UFOTOFU révèle finalement, c’est la tendance institutionnelle à considérer les capacités des femmes comme des anomalies : spectaculaires, pathologisées, contenues. En imitant les langages des institutions et des structures traditionnelles de pouvoir, l’exposition les montre comme des systèmes de retour incessant : palindromiques, réversibles, comiques dans leur persistance. UFOTOFU est donc à la fois archive, parodie et farce. Elle situe l’espace comme un théâtre où le savoir est performé, démonté et rejoué.
En parallèle de UFOTOFU se tient The Syzygy, une « philosophie des sciences » sarcastique inventée par l’écrivain français Alfred Jarry, qui définit la syzygie comme un alignement fortuit doté de sens, tel un jeu de mots.
